international criminal law
International
criminal law is an extremely specialized branch of criminal
law, and BFKW is one of the few firms in the Netherlands with
experience in all aspects of this law. For instance, over
the past eight years BFKW has handled all politically sensitive
extradition cases in The Netherlands. We also deal with 'ordinary'
extradition cases. This branch of criminal law has become
increasingly important with the introduction of the European
Arrest Warrant in 2004. BFKW also focuses on criminal proceedings
before international tribunals, for example the ICTY and the
Special Court for Sierra Leone. Several members of the criminal
law department are also on the roster of Defence lawyers at
the International Criminal Court in The Hague. For more information
on this branch of criminal law, see the section on international
law & human rights. Britta
Böhler, Victor Koppe,
Michiel Pestman and
Liesbeth Zegveld are
the experts in international criminal law.
Finally, BFKW
also conducts litigation in criminal cases before the European
Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. If, for instance, the
right to a fair trial has been violated or a suspect has been
subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment, he/she
can submit a complaint to the Court in Strasbourg once all
of the legal avenues in the Netherlands have been exhausted.
