Fundamental freedoms
The international
law & human rights department focuses on cases in which
the rights of individuals and groups, and the rights of peoples
to self-determination, are central.
The state
always plays a fundamental role in these cases, as the grantor
and the violator of human rights. Many states have totalitarian
or dictatorial regimes in which the human rights of their
citizens are restricted. They are not entitled to move freely,
are not at liberty to practise their religions or philosophies
and are not free to express their opinions. In a number of
situations, political opponents and members of minorities
are routinely jailed, and the torture, murder, or 'disappearance'
of opponents is not uncommon. BFKW is involved in various
national and international procedures to safeguard fundamental
freedoms.
